This book is a "must" to understand the Japanese society. Once you have read it, you know you are not alone anymore ! Thanks to these kinds of books, Japan has started to change. Enlightening!As a Japanese-American who recently moved to Japan to work for a traditional Japanese company, I empathized a great deal with Miyamoto. Even though the book is about his experiences in the government bureaucracy, this book is relevant for those gaijin who work for a Japanese company or even those who simply are trying to fit in and live here in Japan. I'm going to buy the Japanese version for my co-workers to help them understand why I may seem so strange to them and why sometimes I refuse to modify my behavior to fit in. Unlike other books on cultural differences that are highly academic in tone, this book is an easy read in plain English (with lots of dialogue) and perfectly sized for subway reading. 画期的な書籍日本社会にどっぷり浸かっている日本人はともかく、日本社会を研究している外国人にとっては、本当によだれが出そうなくらい多くのきわめて興味深い題材がこの本には含まれていると思う。ハキハキと自分の意見を吐露する、外国育ちの長い日本人にとっては、何かと窮屈な日本社会だが、そんな著者が素直に行動した結果、ぶち当たったトラブルの数々について、ありのままに書きつづっている。 |
